Season 1 of “Game of Thrones” ended with the beheading of Ned Stark. Season 3 with the murder of Catelyn and Robb Stark. Season 5 took out another Stark child, and though book readers have always been a bit hopeful that Jon Snow would survive his wounds from his betraying brothers in black, it’s not looking too good.

The “previously on” scenes that preceded the Season 5 finale took viewers way way back in time to Season 1, with shots of Syrio Forell just before he was murdered by Meryn Trant, and Jon Snow’s uncle Benjen Stark heading out beyond The Wall. We also got a little sneak of Qyburn’s medical experimentation on The Mountain. Those old scenes and old characters came into play during this finale, at times for the betterment of our favorite characters, and at times for the worse.
Most Poised to Take the Throne
The first half of this finale was a rush of action that just kept on going. After Shireen’s tragic murder, the snow began to melt, the mud began to thaw, green grass poked through the white frost and Stannis ordered his troops to march on Winterfell. But some of his men apparently weren’t on board with the whole “burning his daughter alive: thing, and abandoned the cause in the night, taking many of the horses. Not only that, but the men found Selyse (Stannis’s wife) had hanged herself. Then…THEN Melisandre just took off for no apparent reason. Forever ignorant and stubborn, Stannis marched on, and the Bolton army didn’t hesitate to attack as soon as they were within range. The bird’s eye view shot of the Bolton army, orderly and massive, surrounding Stannis’ army, scattered and fleeing, was simultaneously sad and yet funny. It’s almost as if the Lord of Light was also not cool with the murder of Stannis’s only daughter.
The next sequence of events was a mad dash of cause and effect. Sansa, having stolen a corkscrew of some sort, picked her lock and made her way to the broken tower to light the candle. Except the candle went unseen by Brienne, because just moments before, Pod informed her that Stannis’ troops were approaching.
From the tower, Sansa witnessed the same attack, and headed back through the gates of Winterfell. Was she headed back to her room? Or elsewhere? That remains a mystery, but she was stopped by Myranda sporting a bow and arrow. This additional character has always been a frivolous one, but her threatening of Sansa made Reek/Theon snap out of his walking coma and he threw her over the banister to her death. It’s definitely unfortunate that Sansa’s suffering has primarily been a way for Theon to find his humanity again — Sansa’s rape and her imprisonment was a means to an end for a male character’s growth, and that’s incredibly disappointing. But it was satisfying to see the two team up in the end — hopefully, they survived that jump.
Back in the forest, the episode interestingly skipped the uneven battle, and Stannis was left wounded. Brienne approached him, sentenced him to death and quickly swung her sword, but the show cut away without actually showing Stannis’ death. So…is Stannis really dead? It’s interesting that this confuses some viewers. We’ve come so accustomed to seeing the violence and seeing the deaths on screen, that any off-screen death is questionable. The show has never shied away from allowing the viewer to see a character’s death, so why here? Why Stannis? As far as this review is concerned, his status is still unknown.
Great Moments in Feminism
Brienne’s swinging sword then cut to pervert Meryn Trant whipping three young girls with a switch. But there was something odd about the third; she didn’t scream when whipped. He sent the other girls out, and lifted her face — one more hit was all that was necessary for Arya Stark to remove her borrowed face and stab Meryn Trant in both eyes, the chest and the back. She told him he was first on her list. She told him her name. Then she slit his throat. It was brutal and dark, and though Arya has killed before, this was the first time that she did so with viciousness in her heart. Which may be why things didn’t turn out so well moments later.
Most Magical Moment
Upon returning to the House of Black and White, Arya placed the borrowed face she used back in its place and was confronted by Jaqen. “A girl has taken the life, the wrong life,” he said. “That man’s life wasn’t yours to take.” Only death can pay for life, he said, and drank a bottle of poison, falling to his death. Arya screamed in agony; Jaqen was the only friend she’d had for ages. But how little she knew in reality. Jaqen, or a man with Jaqen’s face, was then right behind her. We’ve assumed that the man Arya’s been dealing with this entire time was Jaqen, the man she encountered back on the road. But who is he really? Is that Jaqen gone? Did Jaqen ever exist? Or does Jaqen’s face exist on any man of the Many Faced God? She’s learning a lesson of deception and identity that came along with entering this arrangement. Arya began ripping various faces off of the dead man. One after the other until finally stopping at her own face. Then she abruptly lost her sight, leaving her true fate unknown until Season 6.

Death in Dorne?
Next up, Jaime, Myrcella and Trystane were embarking on their journey out of Dorne. The Dorne storyline has been somewhat disappointing this season: The Sand Snakes were mostly caricature; the silly flirtation between Tyene and Bronn pointless. Doran has been a great plus, and with so many deaths on this show, hopefully he’ll stick around next season to take on more of a role. As they boarded, Ellaria Sand approached them to say goodbye. “Forgive me child, I wish you all the happiness in the world,” she said before planting an odd kiss on Myrcella’s mouth. Aboard the ship, Jaime noted that it was wonderful that Myrcella actually loved Trystane, since once cannot control whom one loves; it was his botched attempt at telling her that he’s actually her father, but before he could even get the words out, Myrcella revealed that she’s known the truth for quite some time. This is the first time Jaime has been able to embrace one of his children as his child. It was heartbreaking and touching… And naturally, the tender moment was interrupted by Myrcella’s nosebleed and collapse. Back on shore, Ellaria wiped her mouth and drank what was no doubt an antidote to the poison she had just inflicted upon Myrcella. Though once again, Myrcella’s death is not a sure thing. There’s little hope for her, but until she’s lying in state like her elder brother, the question will remain.
Wit of the Week
Tyrion: “My Valyrian is a bit nostril.”
In Meereen, the sad little trio of Tyrion, Daario and Jorah sat around moping about the fact that Daenerys had flown off aboard her dragon Drogon. Though Tyrion’s shoddy Valyrian doesn’t make him the perfect match for a role of power in Meereen, it was eventually decided that he would stay and help govern with Missandei and Grey Worm, while Daario and Jorah went searching for Dany. They’ll have to travel pretty freaking far, if the mountains and grassy rocks where Dany ended up are any indication. Though Drogon saved her life, it didn’t appear that he was interested in taking her home, or that he understood a damned word she was saying either. Then, it became a bit more clear where exactly Dany had landed, as hordes of Dothraki horsemen circled her. She dropped the ring she was wearing. (As a signal that she was there? Because it was a wedding ring to Hizdahr?) Point is, Daenerys ends her Season 5 journey in the Dothraki Sea.

Shame, Shame, Shame
Cersei finally came to the realization that the only way she was getting out of that cell was by confessing. She was allowed to return to the Red Keep, but only before walking through here “atonement,” which included having her hair chopped short and walking naked through the streets of King’s Landing. Atonement through further nudity on “Game of Thrones”? You don’t say. Sympathy for Cersei skyrocketed during this scene: Bravo to her for enduring such oppressive religious judgement, and bravo to Lena Headey for having the bravery and acting chops to pull this scene off. Then, as she entered the castle, an enormous new member of the Kingsguard emerged to carry her to safety. The Mountain has returned… in one form or another.
Why, Show, Why?!?
Who knew that those Benjen Stark scenes before the episode began would be such a horrible, horrible tease? At the start of the episode, Sam asked Jon Snow if he could take Gilly and her baby to Oldtown, where he could train to become a Maester. (Interesting note: in the novel, it’s Jon who orders Sam to do so.) During the conversation, Jon noted that he was the first Lord Commander to risk the lives of the Night’s Watch to save Wildlings, and that action came back to haunt him at the end of this finale. After Melisandre mysteriously arrived back at Castle Black, Jon sadly read the news of Stannis’ defeat. Then, Olly rushed in to tell him that a Wildling had seen Benjen Stark out beyond The Wall, but the whole thing was a ruse. Alliser Thorne led Jon to a grave marker that read “traitor” and one by one, the group stabbed him. “For the watch,” they said, as they plowed knives through his chest, Olly getting the last knife in before Jon Snow collapsed, bleeding and Season 5 ended.
For the Book Nerds (May Contain Spoilers from “A Song of Ice and Fire”
“A Dance with Dragons,” the fifth book of the series, ends with this mysterious, presumed death of Jon Snow. Book readers have been theorizing for four years about how this was going to pan out — the show has cut the character of Lady Stoneheart, but rest assured that, in Martin’s world, it is possible to bring people back to life… sort of. But Jon Snow…JON SNOW? He’s supposed to be the “Song of Ice and Fire.” He’s supposed to be the Stark and Targaryen offspring that would be able to use both ice and fire to his advantage. Can he still be? Melisandre arrived back at Castle Black at a mysteriously convenient time. Various theories have emerged: Jon wargs into Ghost at the last minute. Or Jon is burned and resurrected a la his Targaryen aunt Daenerys. Or Jon becomes a White Walker. Or… All of that could be wrong. Jon Snow could simply be dead, and Kit Harington has all but confirmed that it is so. Keep the dream alive, Jon Snow fans; he’s not in Season 6, but hey — there was no mention of Season 7.
It is Known
Way back in April, a humorous Reductress article posited that “Game of Thrones” Season 5 would kill off its audience. That might not be such a far-fetched idea, with the things that have happened this season. With Sansa’s rape, Shireen’s death and now Jon Snow’s probable demise, plenty of audience members will most likely flee. Those remaining will maintain the hope that one of their favorite characters will survive to take the throne, but how many of those characters do we have left to root for? Daenerys and Tyrion, definitely. Arya and Sansa yes, but their story lines have more to do with their own personal achievements and survival, rather than conquest. Prince Doran is a cool addition, but does anyone care about him yet? And even if they do, how many of a show’s beloved characters can a show torture and murder before an audience gives up?
We’ve arrived at the end of George R.R. Martin’s novels as well, and while plenty of readers have stuck it out until now, many have also jumped ship. And unless Martin pumps out the sixth book before Season 6 premieres next spring, he might not maintain the readership that his series has so far enjoyed — not only because folks will simply watch the series, but also because of the hopelessness.
Season 5, all in all, had its ups and downs. There have been epic moments and there have been moments that have caused rage and regretful watching. But successful shows have always been polarizing. Plenty of “Lost” watchers gave up after the death of Charlie. Plenty of “Battlestar Galactica” fans were enraged when… Well, they were enraged a lot. But that’s kind of what comes with watching genre TV, or any TV these days, because TV has gotten so damned good. Fans stick it out for the battles, the White Walkers, the dragons and the hope, the teeny tiny hope, that maybe one of the good guys will make it through all of the death and darkness and snow and either sit on that Iron Throne, or melt the sucker down. We eagerly await the next season, to find out who that might be.

Plot[edit]
In the North[edit]
The weather conditions at Stannis' camp drastically improve, clearing the route towards Winterfell. Melisandre takes credit, claiming that the Lord of Light is rewarding Stannis for sacrificing Shireen. However, Stannis' officers inform him that Shireen's sacrifice has also prompted a mass desertion of his troops, including all of his mercenaries, leaving him with only half his army and no cavalry, and driven Selyse to hang herself. Melisandre immediately flees to Castle Black. Despite all of these setbacks, Stannis orders his remaining troops to march forward towards Winterfell. As Stannis' army marches through the Wolfswood, Podrick sees them and warns Brienne, who leaves to take revenge on Stannis.
As Stannis prepares to lay siege on the castle, the Bolton cavalry, led by Ramsay, suddenly emerges. It becomes clear they greatly outnumber Stannis' army; nonetheless, Stannis draws his sword and leads his men into battle. After a quick yet fierce battle, the Boltons emerge as the victors. Stannis survives the destruction of his army, but is severely wounded after fighting several Bolton soldiers. Brienne then arrives and announces her intentions to execute Stannis for the murder of Renly ('The Ghost of Harrenhal'). Stannis accepts his fate, and Brienne executes him.[1][2]
Meanwhile, in Winterfell, Sansa escapes her room using the corkscrew she stole and lights a candle in the ruined tower to signal for help, but Brienne has already left. After witnessing the defeat of the Baratheon army, she tries to return to her room but is confronted by Myranda, who threatens to mutilate Sansa. Theon finally finds his inner strength and throws Myranda from the castle ramparts to her death, just as the victorious Bolton army returns to Winterfell. Theon and Sansa realize they have to escape at once, and jump from the castle walls into the deep snow below.
In Dorne[edit]
Jaime, Myrcella, Bronn and Trystane leave for King's Landing. On the ship, Myrcella reveals that she knows Jaime is her real father and that she is glad that he is her father. However, Myrcella suddenly collapses, and it is revealed that Ellaria had secretly poisoned Myrcella by kissing her with poisoned lipstick.
In Braavos[edit]
Arya infiltrates the brothel patronized by Trant by taking one of the faces from the House of Black and White. She stabs Trant multiple times, revealing her true identity and confronting him for the murder of Syrio Forel before cutting his throat. When she returns to the House of Black and White, she is confronted by Jaqen and the Waif. Jaqen berates Arya for taking a life not meant for her to take, and that another life must be taken in order to appease the Many Faced God. Jaqen then proceeds to drink from a vial and collapses, much to Arya's shock. However, the Waif changes her face to that of Jaqen and points out to Arya that 'Jaqen' never existed, and that she had been talking to 'No One' the entire time. The Waif also warns Arya that putting on a new face if one is not 'No One' is like poison, and Arya is struck blind.
In Meereen[edit]
With Daenerys missing after having flown away on Drogon, her followers are left unsure of what to do in her absence. Daario and Jorah decide to leave Meereen to search for Daenerys. Tyrion wishes to join them, but Daario points out that he is better suited to govern Meereen in Daenerys' absence, assisted by Missandei and the still-recovering Grey Worm. As Tyrion watches Jorah and Daario leave and ponders his next move, Varys suddenly appears. Varys compares Meereen's current state to that of King's Landing when it was threatened by Stannis, and offers use of his spy network to aid Tyrion. Tyrion wryly remarks that he had missed Varys.
In the Dothraki Sea[edit]
Drogon brings Daenerys back to his lair. Daenerys orders Drogon to take her back to Meereen, but Drogon, still exhausted and wounded, ignores her and goes to sleep. Daenerys wanders off on her own, eventually spotting a Dothraki horde advancing in the distance. As the horde comes closer, Daenerys drops a ring to the ground before being surrounded.

In King's Landing[edit]
Cersei confesses to committing adultery with Lancel to the High Sparrow, but denies having slept with Jaime or conspiring to have Robert Baratheon killed. The High Sparrow decides to grant the 'Mother's Mercy' and let Cersei return to the Red Keep, but says she must return to face trial for the other sins she has not confessed to, and must undergo an 'atonement'. Cersei is stripped, her hair cut short, and she is forced to walk naked the entire way from the Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep. As she walks, she is relentlessly harassed, jeered and pelted with garbage by the angry populace, ultimately breaking down in tears when she finally returns to the Red Keep. She is covered up by Qyburn, who reveals to her the newest member of the Kingsguard, a re-animated Gregor 'the Mountain' Clegane.
At the Wall[edit]
Jon sends Samwell with Gilly and her baby to Oldtown to become a maester, acknowledging (and even somewhat endorsing) the romantic relationship blossoming between Samwell and Gilly. Davos arrives shortly after to ask for supplies and Wildling reinforcements, but Jon refuses, reminding Davos that the Wildlings will never fight for Stannis. Melisandre arrives soon after; her demeanour leads Jon and Davos to realize that Stannis has been defeated and that Shireen and Selyse are dead.
At night, Olly tells Jon that a wildling had recently seen his uncle Benjen Stark, and takes him to speak to him. Led outside to the courtyard, he only finds Thorne, Bowen Marsh, Othell Yarwyck and several other men, along with a grave-marker that reads 'Traitor'. As Jon realizes that he has been betrayed, Thorne, Marsh, Yarwyck, Olly, and the others take turns stabbing Jon, each uttering 'For the Watch'. The men leave Jon as he dies alone in the snow.
Production[edit]
Writing[edit]
'Mother's Mercy' was written by the series' creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It primarily covers elements from George Martin's novels A Feast for Crows, chapters 'Samwell I' and 'Cat of the Canals' and A Dance with Dragons, chapters 'Jon II', 'Theon I', 'Daenerys X', 'Cersei I', 'Cersei II' and 'Jon XIII'. It also contains material from Martin's upcoming sixth novel in the series, The Winds of Winter, chapter 'Mercy'.[3]
Filming[edit]
'Mother's Mercy' was directed by David Nutter, He also directed the previous episode, 'The Dance of Dragons'. It was photographed by Robert McLachlan and was edited by Tim Porter, one of the show's main editors, under the supervision of Nutter.[4]
Cersei's walk of atonement[edit]
Actress Lena Headey portrays Cersei Lannister in the series.
For Cersei Lannister's nude 'walk of atonement' through King's Landing, HBO employed actress Rebecca Van Cleave as a body double for Lena Headey. While filming the scene in Dubrovnik, Croatia in October 2014, Van Cleave performed fully nude while Headey wore a simple beige shift. Both performances were then merged by the show's editing team, combining close-ups of Headey's facial expressions and long shots of Van Cleave's nude walk through the city. In some instances CGI was used to put Headey's face on Van Cleave's body.
Headey says that the showrunners decided to cast a body double for 'several reasons.'[5] Headey says she was glad to use a body double for the scene because she wanted to focus on the character's emotions.[6][7] Another actor noted that Headey's 'extensive tattoos' may have been another reason. Months later, Headey announced that she was pregnant with her second child, though it is unclear if she was pregnant when this scene had to be filmed.[8] Sarah Buchanan of Express notes the strangeness of casting a much younger actress to play the middle-aged Cersei when the key outcome of the walk of atonement in A Dance with Dragons is that when the people see that Cersei's body is not beautiful, she loses a large part of her mystique.[9] The 27-year-old Van Cleave did not show any of the specific signs of aging or past pregnancy for which the Cersei of the books was mocked by the crowd.[8][10][11]
When casting for the role, HBO received applications from more than 1,000 actresses to act as Headey's body double for the scene. A selection of seven finalists, including Van Cleave, was then flown to Belfast, Northern Ireland to audition before the show's producers. Headey also opted out of the casting process, but director David Nutter said finding the right double was one of the most important parts of making the finale. 'We needed somebody who could do The Walk of Shame physically, somebody who could match Lena's integrity, intensity, and sensibility. We found a tremendous actress in Rebecca; she was a godsend. The courage of this girl, who's never done anything like this in her life, who understood what was important about this..once I had her I felt like I could accomplish anything.'

Van Cleave herself described the scene as 'one of the scariest, most wonderful, most gratifying experiences I could have imagined .. I never in a million years would have thought I would be in Dubrovnik surrounded by hundreds of extras and crew members throwing food at me, but it was amazing' and 'I hope the next thing I do will have my head in it.'[7] She also praised Headey's willingness to help her, describing the two of them as a 'tag-team'; Headey would walk behind Van Cleave during the shoot, coaching her on the character's responses.[5][9]
When the showrunners first announced the plans of shooting a nude scene in Dubrovnik, the city's Catholic Church of St. Nicholas strongly opposed the idea, due to it being immoral to walk their sacred grounds in the nude. Eventually, both parties came to the agreement that the shooting could commence, provided no nude scenes would be filmed in a place of worship.[12] During the three-day shoot, Headey walked Van Cleave through each shot, giving insight into all the emotions Cersei was feeling. The six-minute scene was filmed using 500 extras.[5]
Fate of Jon Snow[edit]
D.B. Weiss discussed the decision to kill Jon Snow by saying that he felt the visual medium did not give him the freedom to leave Jon's fate open: 'In a book, you can present that kind of ambiguity. In a show, everybody sees it for what it is. It’s that rule: 'If don't see the body then they’re not really dead.' Like when we cut Ned’s head off, we didn’t want a gory Monty Python geyser of blood, but we needed to see the blade enter his neck and cut out on the frame where the blade was mid-neck. [..] we needed Ned's death to be totally unambiguous.'[13] Actor Kit Harington said of the scene, 'I loved it. I loved how they brought Olly in to be the person who kills me. I love how the storyline with Thorne was wrapped up.'[14]
Although Weiss meant the scene to be unambiguous,[13] the episode left many viewers uncertain as to whether Jon Snow had been killed or merely injured (his fate in the novels is left unconfirmed as of A Dance with Dragons, with much debate about Martin's future intentions). Some of the confusion may be because, as reviewers have noted, Jon was killed in what can be seen as the middle of his story arc and his death does not have an obvious narrative purpose. For example, Nate Jones of Vulture notes, '[I]t's easy to see what [other characters'] deaths meant for the series' sprawling narrative: Ned's execution sent the Stark kids adrift in a universe where there was nobody looking out for them, while Robb's murder was the final death knell for the hopes that the saga would ever have a traditional 'happy' ending. What would be accomplished, narratively, by getting rid of Jon permanently right now?'[15] Both before and after these announcements, viewers have speculated that Jon Snow might have survived his stabbing and there are many fan theories on how he might have accomplished this, including spiritually possessing his direwolf's body or being brought back to life by Melisandre.[13][15][16][17][18] When jokingly asked during a panel if Kit Harington would ever get to play a warg (human who has possessed the body of an animal), Weiss replied with, 'Two words for you: Season 6.'[16] In July 2015, photos of Kit Harington arriving in Belfast—where the series is primarily filmed and where other actors are arriving for the Season 6 script read-throughs—surfaced, fueling speculation of his survival.[19] However, Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair pointed out that Charles Dance was seen at Belfast the previous year, and his character Tywin Lannister only appeared in the first episode of the subsequent season and only as a corpse, although Dance himself confirmed the nature of his role shortly after the announcement.[19][20] Another photo that showed Harington on set in Belfast in a costume that varied from the Night's Watch outfit was published on September 25, 2015.[21][22]

Fates of other characters[edit]
Various interviews with the producers, director and writers have indicated that it is a 'safe bet' that Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy survive their fall, while Stannis and Myrcella Baratheon were definitively killed after being beheaded and poisoned, respectively.[23] Chemistry an atoms-focused approach pdf download for windows.
Reception[edit]
D. B. Weiss and David Benioff received an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for this episode.
Ratings[edit]
'Mother's Mercy' was seen by an estimated 8.1 million viewers on its first airing.[24] This is higher than any previous episode, exceeding the 8 million for 'The Wars to Come.'[25] With Live+7 DVR viewing factored in, the episode had an overall rating of 10.43 million viewers, and a 5.4 in the 18-49 demographic, which was a series high in both viewership and 18-49 rating.[26] In the United Kingdom, the episode was viewed by 2.437 million viewers, making it the highest-rated broadcast that week. It also received 0.121 million timeshift viewers.[27]
Critical reception[edit]
'Mother's Mercy' received critical acclaim. Review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes assembled 31 reviews and gave 'Mother's Mercy' a 97% score and an average rating of 9.1 out of 10. The site's consensus reads that the episode 'wraps up a particularly dark Game of Thrones season with a finale that delivers strong character work and a handful of appropriately bleak cliffhangers.'[28] In his 9.0/10 review, Matt Fowler of IGN praised Jon Snow's death and Cersei's atonement, as well as Arya's and Dorne's storylines, but felt Sansa's storyline was too hurried.[29] Sean T. Collins of Rolling Stone was positive too, writing, 'Slaughter and shame made this the show’s most upsetting season-ender yet.'[30]
